Lindsay McCrums’ new book Chicks with Guns happens to be just that, photographs of chicks with their guns. And while she plays with the juxtaposition of the masculine and feminine I just like to look at the striking portraits. Each portrait in the book reveals a woman or girl with her gun of choice and features a little quote from them. Most of the women are hunters which makes their portraits unsurprising, but there are a few photos that surprise with the age of the model. I don’t have a gun, nor have I really shot a gun, but if I did I’d want it to be a super sexy handgun, which sadly there seems to be a lack of in this book.
“Usually women with guns are turned into comic book characters — Lara Croft, Kill Bill — and I thought it would be fascinating to find out who the real women in our country are who own guns.” For McCrum, Chicks With Guns is not an attempt to enter the ideological debate about guns. Instead, she says she tried to harness the visceral power of photography to provide a more rounded, honest picture of what women gun owners look like today.
Looks like the women that own guns are cops, old southern bittys, or daddies girls from hunting families………sounds about right.
