Painter Kim Cogan: Killing It!

October 13, 2011 by thisisemilypaul

Giant posters of city skylines…….terrible.  Kim Cogans paintings of cityscapes……super awesome.

I don’t know anything about him (except he was born in Korea) and I only scanned his artist statement (because it started to get all deep and serious and stuff) but I do know that he is a freakin fantastic painter.  His style is best described as extreme realism fading to impressionism. He mostly paints in San Fransisco but his newest work is from New York and reflects the moodiness of the city.  His juxtaposition of sharp detail, gradation of color, and soft brush strokes to move your eye around the composition.

Crazy good painter he is! Here are a few of my faves but you should take a peek at his website and pick your own.

Very cool! Reminds me of my friend Joanne Pendola’s work. She mostly paints Brooklyn and Manhattan. She comes from an illustration background, whereas Cogan seems more “painterly,” but the similarities are striking.
